The Eastern Cape MEC for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform, Mlibo Qoboshiyane together with Koukamma Local Municipality Mayor Sam Vuso officially opened a brand new dairy at Tsitsikamma on the 21 September 2017.
Government injected R32 million to construct the new dairy with state of the art dairy parlour machinery milking about 66 cows at a time and yielding the owners 16 000 litres of milk daily which is sold to Parmalat.
At the height of apartheid about 152 families from Tsitsikamma were forcefully removed from their land which includes the 650ha Wittekleibosch farm and surrounding farms. When the land was handed over in 1994 they formed a partnership with a dairy farmer John Du Plessis to continue dairy farming in the area, forming a commercial trading entity known as the Wittekleibosch Development Trust. The dairy farm has created 24 permanent jobs for the communities.
