Child Protection Week

Working together to protect children

Child protection week is commemorated annually in South Africa to raise awareness of the rights of children as articulated in the Children’s Act of 2005. It is against this backdrop that the Koukamma Local Municipality partnered with the Department of Social Development to honour this week under the theme “Working together to protect children”. A special event was held at Kagiso Heights Community Hall in Kareedow where community members across the Koukamma Municipality gathered to discuss issues such as teenage pregnancy, substance abuse and crime prevention that affect the young generation of the municipality. Various speakers at the event emphasised the importance of child protection week primarily to explore the needs, rights and the responsibilities of children. Various government departments offered services on wheels for the community members who attended the event.
